Water Quality Center (WQC)

The Water Quality Center at the UA Environmental Research Lab focuses on immediate questions of potable water quality, undertaking research that spans water security, agricultural, commercial and industrial contaminants, wastewater and mining discharges, as well as issues surrounding potable water. An interdisciplinary group of biologists, chemists, physicists, hydrologists, and engineers work together to address specific water quality issues with funding from the National Science Foundation and the corporate sector.

TRIF-funded programs at WQC have included:

  • Developed a data set utilized by the World Health Organization for national and international guidelines on heterotrophic plate count (HPC) bacteria in utility and household delivery water lines.
  • Developed a data set showing pathogen inactivation in household water lines via point-of-use devices to address water security issue.
  • Developed a molecular-based detection system for the emerging waterborne pathogen Microsporidia.
  • Developed a data set showing limited transport of human pathogens via bioaerosol.
