Sustainability of semi-Arid Hydrology and Riparian Areas

The vision of SAHRA, the NSF Science and Technology Center for Sustainability of semi-Arid Hydrology and Riparian Areas, is to develop an integrated, multidisciplinary understanding of the hydrology of semi-arid regions, and to build partnerships with a broad spectrum of stakeholders (both public agencies and private organizations) so that this understanding is effectively applied to the management of water resources and to the rational implementation of public policy.

TRIF-funded programs at SAHRA have included:

  • A study of rural domestic water demand in conjunction with the Audobon Society on the impact on rural water supplies of subdividing ranches.
  • Research on fluxes of water and minerals in riparian corridors of the Upper San Pedro.
  • Research to determine the human value attached to riparian habitat and correlation to actual ecological value as measured through aerial and biological surveys.
