The long-term goal of the Education and Outreach component of the UA Water Sustainability Program is to encourage outcome oriented projects that enhance the ties between the University and the community. The research within the program emphasizes long-term sustainability, which can only be achieved through multi-disciplinary, integrated approaches to “real-world” science and policy issues. The education and outreach efforts, therefore, focus on balancing the programs for a wide variety of audiences, from K-12 through professional groups, particularly those with industry affiliation.
The program itself must be financially sustainable, so building partnerships is a key component of the program. In addition, the program is designed to support the University’s “focused excellence” approach to the Earth Sciences, which promotes use of University resources in support of socially-relevant issues.
